Feature Spotlight

This Month: Lesser Known Chart Features

This edition of the feature spotlight covers some of the lesser known features of the Chart View. These features are described in the online help, but many are not covered specifically in the tutorials.

For example, the mouse can be used to quickly rescale either axis of the Chart View. Simply use the mouse to drag either axis. This will cause the nearest edge to the mouse to be adjusted as you move the mouse. This is in addition to the manual methods of adjusting the axes through context menus. Also, after it has been adjusted, the value (Y) axis can be reset to its automatic scaling by double-clicking on it.

Another way to select a sub-range of the chart is to drag the mouse across the area of the chart you want to see. This is a great way to zoom in on a specific area without having to check the dates associated with the values. To undo this (or any) scaling, simply select “Undo Last Scaling” from any Chart View context menu.

Horizontal and vertical lines (together, known as crosshairs) were added in TradingSolutions Version 1.1. To activate them, select “Tools” from the “Options” menu and bring up the Charting sub-page. Then, select to display Horizontal (Value) Lines and/or Vertical (Date) Lines under the mouse. You can see the value of the currently selected field for the date under the mouse on the status bar at the bottom of the TradingSolutions window. This status bar value is available with or without the crosshair lines activated.

Finally, when multiple sub-charts are open, the mouse can also be used to drag fields between sub-charts or to new sub-charts. The latter is accomplished by dragging a field from a sub-chart to the date axis below the charts. Entire sub-charts can also be moved up or down by dragging the area to the left of the value (Y) axis.

For more information on these and other features, see “Displaying Data in a Chart” in the online help.

TradingSolutions Tip Box

This Month: Making Money in a Down Market

If you are like most equity investors, you have probably lost a significant percentage of your investment capital over the past several months – especially if you are heavily weighted in technology. Those who were smart or lucky enough to short some of those high flyers during this time made the money that others lost. With TradingSolutions and a good model that utilizes short positions, you don’t need to be smart or lucky to profit in a down market.

EMC Corp. is one of those high flyers that gained 75% from the beginning of the year until 9/20/00 and then lost 26% from that point until now. This stock has outperformed the NASDAQ and made money for the year, but wouldn’t it have been nice to avoid that recent loss? Actually, you could have done even better…

Bring up this image in your Internet browser:

http://www.tradingsolutions.com/products/emcequitycurve.gif

This is an equity curve for a TradingSolutions model for EMC across out-of-sample data (the Testing and Production date ranges). Note that the equity for the model (the green line) was similar to the buy-and-hold equity (the blue line) while the stock was rising, but model’s equity kept rising while the stock’s price went down.

We will likely add this model to the Solution Library section of our web site soon, but as a TradingSolutions newsletter subscriber you don’t have to wait. Import this model into your copy of TradingSolutions (licensed or evaluation) by first downloading the following file:

http://www.tradingsolutions.com/download/emc.zip

This zip file contains a trading solution file (*.tss), a small help file with basic instructions on importing and using a solution, and a file with the raw data for the corresponding stock (*.txt). Before using this model, please read the disclaimer at the bottom of the Solution Library:
