were already planning to purchase TradingSolutions, there is no reason not to
purchase it today and enjoy your free upgrade to TradingSolutions End-of-Day
v2.1 when it is released in the near future.
Use of the beta is free. Availability is currently limited to licensed TradingSolutions users.
The beta version includes all of the features being added in v2.1, including
those found only in the real time version. In addition, it is possible to use
both v2.0 and the v2.1 beta concurrently. However, note that use of streaming

The Solution Service is a free service that provides
daily trading signals and commentary for a select group of stocks. These models
can be used directly as part of your trading strategy or used as examples of
how to generate your own winning signals. To access it, simply press the
“Update Solution Service” button in the toolbar of either the evaluation
version or registered version of TradingSolutions.
Since the last newsletter in the middle of August,
the NASDAQ and S&P 500 have both fallen around 10%. During this time, the
Baker Hughes model gained over 14%. Although a few of the models posted
double-digit losses during this time, the composite loss of the Solution
Service models was several percent less than that of the broader markets. Watch
for this performance to improve with the inclusion of several new models.
To improve the performance of the Solution Service,
previously profitable models that were having tough times finding footholds in
this bear market have been replaced with more resilient models. Since the last
newsletter, a total of five new models have been introduced, including models
for IBM and AOL Time Warner.

This Issue: TradingSolutions Key Concepts
We here at NeuroDimension, Inc. are always happy to answer
your questions about TradingSolutions. We get many questions, from “how can I
perform this specific task” to simply “what can this software do for me?” With
every question, we try to make sure the information that person is seeking is
made easier to locate in the help files or general materials.
Over time, we have noticed that in addition to “frequently
asked questions”, some of what we encounter are “sometimes misunderstood
concepts”. These are concepts that prevent users from gaining a complete
understanding of TradingSolutions. Here is a quick rundown of some of the
things that users occasionally have trouble with.
Use Fields To Perform Operations
“Fields” are used to
store values in TradingSolutions. They include the Open, High, Low, and Close
prices of data you import, as well as any values you calculate based on these
prices. They include entry/exit signals that tell you when to trade and signal
analyses that tell you how these signals have been performing. Any time you
want to perform a new operation in TradingSolutions, it will usually start with
creating a new field.
Neural Networks Learn By Example
The most powerful feature in TradingSolutions is its neural
network technology. Neural networks are basically mathematical models that map
the relationship between a group of data and a “desired” result. These
relationships are “learned” by presenting the models with previous examples of
the data. The relationship can then be used to calculate what the result should
be based on the current data.
The Optimal Signal Is The Best That Could Have Been
The optimal signal is an important concept in
TradingSolutions. Given a set of historical data, it determines when the best
times to buy and sell would have been by looking into the future following each
given day. Since we can’t physically look into the future for today, we can’t
use the optimal signal directly for trading. However, we can use it as the
desired result of a neural network, allowing us to create a model to “predict”
the best action to take for today.
Let Signal Analysis Be Your Guide
You have probably heard the phrase “past performance is no
guarantee of future results”. While this is always true with trading
instruments and strategies, past performance can also be your best barometer of
a strategy’s potential. If your goal is to make money, your first question
should be “would this approach have made me money?” You can use the in-depth
signal analysis of your trading signals in TradingSolutions to determine this,
along with checking the consistency and robustness of the trades for a variety
of conditions.

Many TradingSolutions users read Technical Analysis of
Stocks and Commodities (TASC), the Traders’ Magazine. It’s a great way to
trade smarter with detailed information on trading strategies, charting
patterns, indicators, and computerized trading methods. As a free service to
our users, we arrange for the “Traders’ Tips” section of the magazine to
include tips and techniques for implementing many of the indicators found in
the magazine in TradingSolutions.
Each time a tip is included in the magazine, we also include
the implemented functions in the Solution Library on our web site. These
functions can be imported into either the full version or the evaluation
version of TradingSolutions and are completely free. Visit the Solution Library
